Solo Exhibition “Between a Dance and sitting in a Chair”
Solo Exhibition “Between a Dance and sitting in a Chair”
Mid-career retrospective exhibition with new work by Sharelly Emanuelson by CBK Zuidoost in collaboration with the Thami Mnyele Foundation.
Sharelly Emanuelson reflects the feeling of life in the Caribbean in her work – the warmth, the island feeling – but at the same time exposes the underlying layer of the consequences of colonialism on the islands, effects that continue to have impact today. She shows this through themes such as language, ecology, dance or movement, education, poverty, trade and tourism. Between a Dance and Sitting in a Chair is both the title of the latest work and an overview of Emanuelson's oeuvre. The exhibition shows her development from documentary maker to a versatile and autonomous artist. Emanuelson's works tell about the effects of the colonial period and the subsequent period of postcolonial hyper-industrialisation on daily life in the Caribbean. It is about issues in the current multicultural society on the islands, such as tourism development, poverty, educational issues, the decline and change of culture due to import and trade from outside, and last but not least: climate challenges.
